I'm working with a large Excel file that contains company names. In some cases the same company might be called "Company Inc" or "Company Incorporated" or "Compani Inc." How can I effectively combine these under a single spelling?

You could use Find and replace.
Highlight your column of names - Find and select - Replace - Find what - input "co*" (without the quotes) - replace with - "Company Inc"

Failure is not falling down but refusing to get up.
There are thousands of diffrent company names and each one is listed several times... Any way to avoid typing them into find and replace?
If the names are, say, kreativsoul comp inc, or rd company it doesn't matter about the name of the company. By inserting co and the wildcard* it will pick up anything AFTER co in the name.
So you get kreativsoul Company Inc, rd Company Inc which gives a uniform appearance to the names.
Try it.
