Counting a column of numbers based on a unique identifier

I have data presented in a matrix. I want to have a summary page that analyzes that data. On the Data tab, where the student name and class intersect, I input the period in which a student will take a class. On the analysis tab, I want to know how many classes a particular student has taken. See the attached example. Thanks for any help!!

    in c3 of analysis sheet
    =COUNT(OFFSET(Data!$C$4,0,MATCH(A3,Data!$C$1:$G$1,0)-1,10))

@mdw's method is probably more efficient, here is another approach in case you have just a handful of data...

following CSE formula in C3 on Analysis tab:

    and then drag-fill down.

CSE, aka Array aka { }, formulae are confirmed with CONTROL+SHIFT+ENTER.
Replace commas ( , ) with semicolons ( ; ) in formulae, if your locale setting demands.
All good ideas are courtesy resources from this forum as well as others around the web.
