Excel loading time, load fails and general excel speed

Hey guys,

I have had a bit of issues with one of my excel files since it has grown to huge sizes! over 100,000 rows of data, which extends across to column BIQ! Most of these columns are not raw data but manipulations of the original data which extends across to column CZ. Many of the manipulations were achieved by macros or formula, I developed my own user interface to perform manipulations and replace data as values for storage and speed optimization.

However I am having general issues opening the sheet now, sometimes requiring a repair by excel before it allowed me to open it. My PC has an AMD AMD 8 core fx8120 cpu 8 Gig of ram, and over 500gb free space. The spread sheet is currently about 400mb in size, any ideas suggestions?

Hi Alan,

can you explain what you want to extract from the data?
I often work with well over 400.000 rows (but much less collums) and the formulas i use take some time (<5 minutes) to calculate but the file is fast and "just" 35mb.
In most cases you do not have to manipulate the original data to retrieve information.

I am afraid the manipulations are required in this case, but this shouldn't be too much of an issue since I have a macro that converts them to values. Is a 400mb size file simply too big?

the files i use also break down i some cases, most of the time i want to many things at once.
i dont have files of >400mb so i wouldn't know if that is the reason.
