# using fill or autofill to recognize a numeric series in a formula

1. ## using fill or autofill to recognize a numeric series in a formula

Hi: If I enter .5 in A1 and 1 in B1, autofill (handle) continues with the series .5, 1, 1.5 in C1, 2 in Da etc.
If I enter =.5 in A1 and =1 in B1 it does not recognize the series.....
I would appreciate any assistance. TIA.

I'm using 2003 excel.

If you enter .5 in A1, then use the RIGHT mouse button to drag down, a menu will pop up. Select 'Series...' and in the 'Step Value' field, enter .5 and click OK.

why would you want to use =1 anyway though?

4. ## Re: using fill or autofill to recognize a numeric series in a formula

Here is the problem specifically: I want to drage these cells across the first row and use autofill to increase the boldfaced number by .5 in each cell. Autofill does not recognize the pattern and the 2.5 is static (i.e., continues to appear in each cell and must be changed manually. A bit of problem if you want to fill 1000 cells (A1-XX) in the row.

(cellA1) =IF(AND(\$C\$534="yes",\$J\$2=2.5),A495,"")

(cell B1) =IF(AND(\$C\$534="yes",\$J\$2=3),B495,"")

(cell C1) =IF(AND(\$C\$534="yes",\$J\$2=3.5),C495,"")

etc.
