Question Find and select cells that meet specific conditions question

I have done this in the past in Excel2003 I believe, but here is my problem: I want to search a text document that has been pasted into Excel 2007. On the Home screen I click on Find & Select/Find/Find and Replace/ Options/Format/Choose format from cell. I then click on the cell I want to find all similar cells (N&W Coordinates) but all I get is a cross and pencil symbol and when I click on the cell I want to use as the example of the format, nothing happens?
Also, if I do manually enter part of the coordinate string I then get the coordinates using the 'find all'. However after highlighting the list of find all , I cannot right click and copy it?
Basically I do motorcycle Rallying and we are emailed a PDF of Rally Bonus points, which I convert to TEXT and paste in Excel. From there I need to 'find/search for coordinates to plan my routes. Like I said I did this last year but for the life of me I forgot what I did. My records indicated something about N(star)W in searching the Northing and Westing coordinates but it doesn't seem to work now! And me reading and re=reading the Excel Find and select cells that meet specific conditions hasn't help. I'm stumped, and help would be appreciated.
Attached is the PDF to TEXT worksheet, I just need to know 1) how to find the N & W coordinates in the text document, and 2) once found how to copy them to amouther worksheet for more sorting stuff.
    Thanks,
    Robert

Re: Find and select cells that meet specific conditions question

Hi deerhead and welcome to the forum,

When you do a Ctrl-F to find on your worksheet you will see the Find dialog box. There is a checkbox in this dialog asking if you want to "Match entire cell contents". Make sure you uncheck this box.

Does this then find your "NW" in cells? Was that the answer to your question?
One test is worth a thousand opinions.

Re: Find and select cells that meet specific conditions question

    Hi,
Thanks for the advice BUT the cell is unchecked. I can't figure why the 'choose cell format' isn't working? I have done this search in the past but can't remember how I did it or if I was using 2003 or 2007. Obviously Excel is set up to do this or it wouldn't have the menu choice of 'choose cell format'! I also can't figure why the 'preview' box has a * in it and why when I choose 'choose cell format' I get a little cross and pencil symbol?
    Maybe somebody knows?
Thanks in advance for the help.

Are you using Excel or Open Office?

    Hi DeerHead,

See if this helps - http://chandoo.org/wp/2008/04/04/cha...lace-in-excel/

I think you need to have a format in the cell that you select to have it look like anything has changed. You might also make Col A wider so the format you select fills the entire text.

ALSO - you should use the same Replace letters as you are searching for before you do the search.

I think that is what you are trying to remember.

Re: Find and select cells that meet specific conditions question

    Hi,
See cell A48, that is the text and format I am searching for. Since all text is in column A I don't think widening it will do anything. I have not 'filled' out the replace because I can't find the to be replaced?
    Thanks,
    Robert

I have an Idea... Try searching for all cells that have "N3" in them. That might work for you.

Re: Find and select cells that meet specific conditions question

That is what I finally did but that is a workaround versus the correct way. Why doesn't the 'choose cell format' work? I tell you it worked in the past.
What will N*W do? I had in my notes N(star)W as a sheet with data on it? However, the search & find/find didn't have any residual data to see exactly what I did.
What is 'choose cell format' supposed to do? What does the little cross with pencil symbol do?
    Thanks,
    Robert

Re: Find and select cells that meet specific conditions question

Can you use my attached Excel spreadsheet and see if 'choose cell format' works for you, and get a listing of all the coordinates on the sheet and then copy that list and put it on a different spreadsheet in the same workbook?
    Thanks,
    Robert
