Screen doesn't display excel sheets properly or doesn't scroll down

I have a large (3.6mb) excel worksheet which often doesn't display properly; either the columns/ rows go out of line or I cannot scroll down. I can select cells using the Find / Goto function or arrow keys but these remain 'off-screen'.
I have a 64 Bit system with 4 GB RAM and do regular disk defragments so don't think it can be my pc's performance. The workbook has many vlookups (some of which are now broken links) and sum formulas. Before I spend the many hours reducing the number of formulas etc I would like some advice on which things will have the biggest impact on file size/display performance; or maybe their is another way to get it working? Is there a way to do an analysis on various parts of a workbook to see where the largest problems lie?

    Hi

Excel uses the printer driver and the best one to use is a laser printer driver. With large files it is also best were possible to avoid volitile functions if you do a google on that it should give you a list. The other thing to do is perhaps go to manual calculation and get the sheet to update when you have a cuppa.

    I don't think so 3.6mb is a large workbook

The workbook has many vlookups (some of which are now broken links) and sum formulas
One suggestion for the above quote if you have lot of formula's then just change the Calculation Option to Manual

    Formulas>>Calculation>>Calculation Option>>Manual.

Whenever you would like to run the calculation then Press F9 and check whether it's showing any increase of performance

Hi Sixthsense, I already have it on manual calculation - sorry I omitted that in my question. The workbook saves and calculates fast enough; the problem is that you can't see the cell that is selected, the scroll bar goes down but the same section of sheet remains on display. Anyway, your answers 'crystallised my thinking' and help me solve my own question! I played around in the View tab, changing from Normal to page break view and back and unfroze/refroze panes and it is working now, so thanks all the same

While reading the above quoted sentence I was thinking to suggest Freez Panes, Glad you solved your problem on your own
