Remove Duplicates but keep Cell Spacing

    Hi there,

Apologies if this seems like a simple query, but it's been driving me mad!

I have a list of events, sorted by date, then location, with descriptions. I only want to show the date the first time it happens.

I have found the Remove Duplicates button, but that shifts all cells upwards. I'd rather select duplicate cells and clear contents, then it would keep the blank cells between the dates.

    Is this possible?

    Many thanks for your time,

    Emma

    Hi Emma,

How about using conditional formatting where you just hide the other dates...

    Conditional Formatting
    • Highlight applicable range >> A2:C100
    • Home Tab >> Styles >> Conditional Formatting
    • New Rule >> Use a formula to determine which cells to format
    • Edit the Rule Description: Format values where this formula is true: =$B1=$B2
    • Format… [Number, Font, Border, Fill] >> Pick white font
    • OK >> OK
    HTH
    Regards, Jeff

    Hey Jeffrey,

That's a great suggestion, thanks, but I think it may be unsuitable based on what I'll then do with the data.

I convert it to xml and then import it into inDesign to produce a listings section of a magazine, so even in a different format, once it was converted to xml, the data would show again.

I'd love it if anyone else had any other suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Emma

Make use of COUNTIF or COUNTIFS functions

    Thanks for the suggestion Sixthsense.

Unfortunately, I'm not very experienced with Excel - could you possibly explain further?

    Thanks,

    Emma
