Another file appears when opening .xlsm files?

More of a curiosity question than anything.

I am opening a file called Filename.xlsm . When I open this file what appears to be a shaded icon opens in the same folder named ~$Filename.xlsm. It doesn't seem to affect anything, but a co-worker asked why this happens, and I really have no idea. I am the author of the original file.
