Row height/column width curiosity question

So, I have a question out of curiosity, if anyone knows. I'm sure that anyone who has used Excel has probably noticed that a cell width of 10 is much greater than a row height of 10. Anyone have any idea why this is? I have tried to make cells as close to square as I can at times, but it is usually a bit of a guessing game.

After doing some research on this, one source suggested to get the row width and height for
a perfect square, use the drawing tool to make a square in the size you want, then resize
a cell height and width to fit around the square.
Hold down the shift key when selecting the rectangle icon to draw a square.

After you make your square, use your mouse in the column and row border areas when resizing row height and width and
you should see the pixel and point values for the height or width. Use these point values to make your cells perfectly square.

It was stated that the cell width represents number of characters, and the row height represents number of points.

I found that when I reduced my screen resolution to the lowest setting available,
the square gridlines appeared stretched out as horizontal rectangles.
