Format Cells: Currency - doesn't work 1st time

I have had this issue on multiple versions of Excel. 2003 and 2007. Can't remember if it happened on 97. Am currently running 2007 on both an XP and a 7 platform (different computers).

When I select a group of cells (column, for instance) and try to format them for "Currency" it usually will initially format them to "Number". I will then have to select Format again and choose "Currency" and then it will change them to currency.

Why is it doing this and is there a way I can get it to work correctly the first time through?

Disclaimer: I just created a new document and experimented with three columns. Column A had no data, Column B had numerical data, Column C had numerical and text data. And it worked properly on all three. AAAArrrrgghhhh!!!!

    Thank you.

Not sure but I think your problem sits in the Control Panel. Go to the Control Panel and at "Region & Language" under "Formats" choose "Additional settings". Set the currency symbol in there, apply it and then try again. Excel looks for the data from there when it sets the symbol to use - if that is not set then it leaves it blank first time. At least that is how I understand it to be.

It is now near the end of 2023. This has been a problem with Excel for over 20 years. This frustrated the hell out of me in college over 20 years ago and still frustrates me with my Mac version of Excel today. It blows my mind that something this frequently used, and that should be so easy to fix in development updates, still persists to this day. If any one knows how to fix this in the Mac version please let me know.
