Excel 2010 one sheet linked to another excel file just for visualization

    Hi there,
I have a workbook with several sheets with formulas, etc. one of the sheets its like a "resume" of the workbook. I want that sheet with the "resume" to be visualized by other person's without giving the access to the workbook.
The ideia it's a file with linked data with the workbook that have the sheet with the "resume". When i change some data in the workbook the file with the linked data must be updated whe someone open it and cannot edit, it is just for visualization.
Any help?! I prefer to use just excel! nothing fancy, just basic stuff.

    Big Thks

    Hi there,

I done it at my work. Resuming, I have a workbook that is updated by a "Dispatcher". As you know, if a workbook is being used from a user, other person that wants to access the same file it shows "blocked by other user", so I have created a new Workbook that retrives the data from.

What I will need to know is if both workbooks and stored on the same location (sharedrive or PC).

If so, have both open and on the one you want the data, just type on the cell: "=" and go to the other one where the data is and click the cell you want the information/values and use it for all data you want.

Let me know if I did not make myself clear on this. On this case is more "easy done than tell"

    Best regards,
    Filipe

Re: Excel 2010 one sheet linked to another excel file just for visualization

    HI,
I already think on that solution but it isn't enoughf for my problem. Because the the sheet that i want to link to another excel file it is a resume sheet from other sheets in the original workbook. The resume sheet i need to change layout and display, so it is in constant change and it have a lot of resumed information.
I need to link to the resume sheet and duplicate all the sheet data, selecting cell by cell it will not work because of the constat changes. Only solution it is to replicate all the resume sheet.
The original workbook as i said it have lots of sheets with data formulas etc between them, and the resume one it resumes all of them, and usually i need to make some changes only in the resume.
The ideia is to give acces in one file linked the the original woorkbook data only to the resume, that file linked to the resume will be accessed threw the shared dropbox folder.

    Best regards

Well i tried with selecting all the cells in the original "resume" sheet that i want to be linked, i copied and the pasted with the option "linked to image" to another sheet in another workbook file.
It works fine when i have the original file open, it asks to update when i open the linked file and it works.

I need it to update if the original file is closed, if it is closed, when i open the linked file it asks to update but it doesnt update! it just updates if the original file is open.
how can i solve this ?!

    Regards

    Hi there,

That's strange because the one I did, it updates the data even with the original closed.

Try to make the formulas with the both files open. On the totals one you should see on the formula the file extension, that way it will update even the original is closed.

Maybe the linked to image will only copy when both are open.

I will try to give you one example later on. Not sure if will work on your PC.

    Best regards,

Well, let's see if that works.

Download the Zip file and store the folder on your PC.

There are 2 files, the original and the totals.

Try to play a little bit on the "Original" file and check the totals.

Open the "Totals", update the data and see if the totals match.

Let me know if it's working on your side.

I have tested with and without the Original file opened and works fine.

    Best regards,
