Does SSD hard disk or a faster chip improve excel performance?

Hi,

If I want to improve my excel performance like ability to open multiple excel and sheets to perform calculation, should I change to a SSD or a faster intel chip? My current PC sometimes give me a black screen for my excel sheet or is unable to save certain sheets when I open too many sheets.

My thinking is that more memory is the first concern. If you are really running on 2003 Excel you might also consider an upgrade. Look at performance improvements between 2007 and 2010 Excel at:

I have a computer with a 256 GB SSD and when I open an Excel file that is located on the SSD, it is very much faster in opening and calculating than if the same file is located on the hard drive. So, that part of the speed equation at least on my computer is easily seen. The memory part, I can't address as my computer has loads of fast memory and I am not about to remove some for testing. Many of Excel's features are memory dependant. If you do a search in the Excel help files for Excel specifications and limits you will see that there are quite a few items listed as being memory dependant. From that I would conclude that the amount and speed of the computer's memory would have a significant impact on performance.
