Data validation list not allowing user to change value from drop down when sheet protected

Hi All,

I'm having some problems with a drop-down box in an workbook when the sheet is protected. The cell in question is unprotected, so to allow the changes to be made however whenever you go to click the dropdown the mouse icon change to a hand with finger pointing and will not let me select. I can select if the sheet is unprotected and also when protected, if I select a cell surrounding and use the keyboard to highlight the cell the drop down can then be used. The book is a 97-2003 compatible book, and i'm using 2010. I've tried to replicate the issue in a brand new book but cannot.

Has anyone come across this or know what it could be?

Just an update, If I select "Edit Object" when protecting the book it allows me to select but I have macro buttons that I dont want the user to be able use move or resize.
