The hide/ unhide sheet function is greyed out. Sheets/ workbook are not protected. Using Excel 2010 in a Windows 7 environment.
Any ideas? Thanks.

Is the workbook shared?

Nope ... the workbook was posted to a network folder where others have opened it, even editing ... but it is on a first-open-has-rights basis only. I subsequently saved the file to my hard drive, and still the Hide/ Unhide is greyed out. Other possible relevant factor is that workbook was first created in Excel 2003, though we've now upgraded to 2010 - but retained the file in 2003 format because not all users have yet upgraded.
I'm baffled!

I have noticed some strange things with Excel 2003 files. I am experimenting to see if I can improve the situation that is similar to yours. So far, I have discovered that the preview window in Windows Explorer can cause Excel 2010 to freeze (deny access to) some commands if the file is selected in Windows Explorer and a preview is showing. Finding the file in Windows Explorer and clicking on a different file seems to correct the situation. This is especially true if the file is on Skydrive. I am experimenting with having the preview window not visible to see if that helps. Those files that cause problems on Skydrive also cause problems when copied to the hard drive.
Try turning the Preview off in Windows Explorer....a long shot guess.
