Excel melts down when I try to refresh data

I have a smallish file (about 4.5MB) that has a bunch of PivotTables and regular tables. A few of them connect to a SQL database, others connect to a local Excel workbook (about 32MB in size). When I try refreshing all of the data at once, Excel's memory usage starts skyrocketing and when it hits around 1.7GB, I start getting the error "Cannot complete task with available resources." This seems to be a common problem. I'm using Excel 2010 on Windows XP *ugh*.

Any idea as to why it's doing this? I did similar work with Excel 2010 on a Windows 7 machine at my last office and never encountered this issue.

It helped a tiny bit. It took longer for Excel to crash. Unfortunately, it seems that when it starts "Calculating PivotTable report," it hits that memory threshold and it crashes.

I'm going to take the files home and see if it crashes on my computer which is 64-bit and has 64-bit Excel 2013...

Well, I decided to add those local workbooks as external data connections instead of directly referencing their cells. Looks like that fixed the problem. I'm guessing Excel was opening that workbook (about 32MB) each time... that would add up.
