Alphanumeric sort - Excel 2010 not working

What I want to do is very simple. My table has a column with values 1, 2, 1a, 2a, 1b, 3, ... I want to sort them as 1, 1a, 1b, 2, 2a, 3, ...
I have tried the following options and nothing worked.
1. formatting them as "TEXT", and then sorting
2. =TEXT('Ref', "####")
3. =TEXT('Ref', 0)
Please open the attachment to know what I mean. If you can correct the attachment and upload it back, it will be of great help.

How representative of your real data is the example you posted? How many records (rows) are you likely to have? How many digits in your numbers? Is it only one single letter after the number?

Select column with values 1, 2, 1a, 2a, 1b, 3, ... then "text To Column"
Next > Next > in this stage,... Select TEXT.. Instead of GENERAL . and finish..
after conversion.. now sort... and it will work..

Dear Debaraj, I tried that. It is not working. Can you please do that in the attachment if you can?
I just want you to convert all Numeric text to TEXT..
You can choose another route to convert Numeric Values to TEXT..
