Worksheet column headings (A,B,C etc) partially obscured on using multiline formula bar

    As title.

Whenever I expand the formula bar in XL2007 to use its multiline feature, my worksheet column headers (i.e. the grey "A", "B", "C" etc.) become partially obscured. They remain partially hidden even after I have returned the formula bar to single line.

    So far I have tried:
    • Hiding/showing the formula bar
    • Hiding/showing the worksheet row/column headings
    • Various combinations of the above (including hiding both then showing again in different orders)
    • Changing the worksheet zoom level
    • Minimising and restoring the workbook window within the XL MDE
    • Minimising and restoring the Excel app window

None of the above has any effect. Only solution I can find is restarting Excel, which is obviously not ideal. I've searched the net and these forums. I have found a few people asking the same question, but when it does get answered, the responders talk about autosizing the first worksheet row, so just to be clear this is not a problem with worksheet row heights, it is Excel's built-in column headers.

    I'm on SP3 (ver. 12.0.6611.1000)

Has anyone else noticed this behaviour/found a fix?

    Cheers

Screen grab added to OP. Not sure why it doesn't appear inline (the forum FAQ says it should using [IMG] markup, which I've used) but hey the link works. Any and all input appreciated. This bug is driving me nuts.

I think that your computer is only partially refreshing the screen when you expand the formula bar. This could be due to something "hogging" the graphics processing. Graphics and Printer drivers that are out of date can cause problems. Update those drivers and test.

Have you installed anything new just before the problem started?

Have you scanned the computer (full scan) for malware and viruses?

Have you tried running the computer in Safe Mode to see if the problem persists?

Hi newdoverman and cheers for your response. It's my work pc, only a couple months old and has a pretty standard config. Graphics wise it's an nVidia dual head GPU with the latest drivers. All the installed printers are network printers with automatic driver updates. Windows itself (W7) is updated automatically but it's also silent updates so I don't know how far along we are with those. Would be surprised if we're much behind the current crop of patches. AV wise the system runs a scan every lunch time and the network security guys here have the whole thing locked down tighter than a duck's ar*e: common malware attack vectors are all well covered.

Unfortunately our desktop support guys aren't quite as zealous as our network security guys so they're just not interested in fixing a niggling problem like this.

I personally don't think it is a graphics problem, as I can hide/reshow the formula bar and headers; four separate actions, each of which involves everything below the ribbon/QAT being redrawn. Even when I hide just the formula bar, the column headers stay partially obscured but move up into the space where the formula bar was previously, as you would expect, with the row headers and the worksheet content also moving upwards. I will however try what you suggest when I get in to the office and start the PC in safe mode, assuming I can do so. Failing that I will disable Windows Aero effects and see if that forces it to draw correctly. I'm less worried about eye candy than I am about having a decent size column header area that I can easily hit without having to twiddle the mouse to get the column selection/resize handles.

I hope that you are able to track down the cause of the problem. Seeing that your system is in many ways locked down, can you get access to the Start Up in msconfig.exe? There you might be able to see and disable things being initiated upon boot that are not only not needed but resources hogs.
