[SOLVED] Validation problem with reading Lists

    Hi,
I have be having the same problem as here http://www.excelforum.com/excel-gene...-selected.html I used some of the attached files (thanks), but, I cannot seem to get it working. The "List1" is Name in the table on sheet4, then there is the helper and list 2. On Main sheet I have the drop down list selection process. However List2 always seems to read the same, and I cannot seems to access the defined List2 in sheet4 from the validation data in the drop down list in the main sheet (not sure weather this is the problem) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

    Scott

Re: Validation problem with reading Lists

I have created a list, and under the Data Validation the source accesses Sheet4 Q4 - Q19 (at the moment). What I am trying is to choose a card from a drop down list, the card list will be kept on sheet4 (main sheet C column), then the option to choose that particular card again will be taken from the list and not leave a blank gap. After this I would move on to card 2 and repeat the process.

Thank you for quick reply, Hope this clarifies..

Sorry, but in my case it doesn't.

Can you manually add some typical results and explain how you arrive at them. And please explain what column Q on Sheet4 is meant to be doing. I can't help thinking this is all more complex than it needs to be. Neither am I sure what you mean by 'not leave a blank gap'.

Are we talking dependent drop down lists here where the choices available in one drop down are dependent on a choice made in a prior drop down list?

Re: Validation problem with reading Lists

With the drop down boxes on main C column. I choose a card, the name of the card is then printed in the cell, the rest is automatically filled in (other columns). When choosing the next card the option to choose the previous chosen card is not there and there is not a gap indicating that it was there. Repeat process as needed. The code has been copied from another user, and it worked in his example, however when transferring it over to my sheet, something went wrong! I will include the other users example. I am not an expert and do not 100% understand the example.

    Thanks

    Scott

Re: Validation problem with reading Lists

See if this amended workbook is easier to understand

    The Names are all dynamic.
But the formula in the helper must be extended as your validation range increases, this could also be dynamic.

The formulae in H3 is an array and must be confirmed with Ctrl+Shift+Enter not just Enter before dragging down

Re: Validation problem with reading Lists

Here's an update to your particular file. I've taken the opportunity to simplify the List2 formulae.
Please note that these are array formulae and need to be entered with Ctrl Shift and Enter. I think these had been entered as a regular formulae in your original file.
