An existing comment box does open automatically if you hover over a cell. Do you mean that you want to create one automatically if you click on a cell? That can be done with VBA.

Install this code in the VBA code module for a worksheet, and then every time you click on a cell in that worksheet a new comment will be created, if there is not already a comment for that cell.

After installing the code you must save the file as a macro-enabled file (.xlsm).

Thanks this works bit is not quite what I was looking for. I need the comments box to come up when a cell is highlighted to give the user the option to enter info but if no info is to added the comments box should disappear.
