    Hid everything in a spreadsheet

I somehow hid every sheet and all data in a worksheet, when I was trying to hide some columns before sending a comparison file to some colleagues. I know the stuffs there or the completely empty workbook is 3 MBs in size. Most of the stuff is greyed out and I cant figure ouot how to un-hide or bring back anything.

Its to large to attach can someone help!

Click on the intersection at the top left between the column headers and the row headers. Then click format, unhide rows and/or columns.

Re: Hid everything in a spreadsheet

Not to be rude, but I consider myself somewhat of and excel expert. This is not simply and oopps, I clicked to wrong thing and hid some rows. This is all 4 sheets of data are gone (But based on size of file are still there).

    For Further info:

When opening the document excel opens to the grey background with no columns or rows as if you had closed down all open spreadsheets without closing excel

all the tool bars except a few are greyed out

    Not to be rude
    Really?

You can't have a workbook with no sheets and you can't hide all the sheets. You may, for all I know, have selected all the sheets (inadvertently) and then selected all the columns (inadvertently) and then hidden all the rows or columns (inadvertently).

You may have (inadvertently) hidden the window. If that's the case, click on the View tab on the ribbon and click Unhide.

I wasn't there when you did whatever you did. I can't see what you can see. And I can't examine your workbook because I can't see it because it is too big to post.

So, I will bow to your expertise in Excel and leave it with you.

When you work out what you did and fix it, it would be useful if you could post your solution so that others may benefit from it.

    Yes, really!

Thank you for your suggestion as to un-hiding the window as that was what happened! I didn't even know that was an option.

As to the rudeness comment, I really wasn't trying to be rude, but your first response was quite a basic step in fixing the issue. I know my description wasn't the best, as I was reeling after the possibility of losing most of today's work. And then I come on here to ask for help, and get an answer as if you were helping someone who was working on their first spreadsheet and made a mistake! I work on spreadsheet for the better part of my day, everyday. and was kinda, I guess, insulted by the basic answer.

I thank you very much for your help and am deeply sorry if any of my actions were considered offensive!

Re: Hid everything in a spreadsheet

cdotyii, in Trevor's defence, we have had members in here that have unintentionally done exactly what he described to fix. We have no way of knowing your excel skill level by just looking at your name (in fact with only 54 posts after 2+ years, some would consider (apparently incorrectly) a lower skill level just based on that)

I can understand your frustration, thinking you may have lost valuable data

Most higher-level members here start off with obvious solutions, and then work upwards from there, and based on experience answering a number of questions, this helps more times than not.

Hope that explanation helps a bit? Looking forward to helping with future questions

Re: Hid everything in a spreadsheet

Sounded a bit rude to me but that's electronic communication for you But, I'll live and I am happy to accept your apology ... not really offensive, just kinda short.

Based on the information provided, the fact that you're profile says you're still using Excel 2003, you've been on the board for 2+ years, you have around 54 posts and there is no indication of your level of experience, I offered a potential solution. Hiding Windows isn't something I do often, so it doesn't spring to mind.

I have to be honest and say that I have ended up with hidden windows/workbooks when my code hasn't completed properly in testing and it wasn't fun trying to work out how to get the thing to show up again.

Glad you're up and running again ... and you didn't lose the day's work (and the workbook).

If you are satisfied with the solution(s) provided, please mark your thread as Solved.

    New quick method:
Select Thread Tools-> Mark thread as Solved. To undo, select Thread Tools-> Mark thread as Unsolved.

Or you can use this way:

How to mark a thread Solved
    Go to the first post
    Click edit
    Click Go Advanced
Just below the word Title you will see a dropdown with the word No prefix.
    Change to Solved
    Click Save

You may also want to consider thanking those people who helped you by clicking on the little star at the bottom left of their reply to your question.

Good, I'm glad everyone is Hunky-Dorey again!

And, I may have only been on here a few times, because I usually only come when I have a problem! I tried starting to answer some issues, but found that many things were already answered by the time I could get back to it or by the time I found the issue on the board. So I left that to the real experts!
