Is there a way to customise how you tab from one cell to another?

I've tried holding down control from the second cell and continuing to hit each cell in the order I want and then going back to the first cell, creating a name in the cell name box, then hitting enter but this hasn't worked. I'm using Excel 2011 for mac. Hoping it's something simple I'm just not doing!

One way,
select the cells you want to go to,
Go to format cells,protection and uncheck "Locked"=>OK
Protect the sheet, make sure to check "Select Unlocked cells".
Now you will tab to the unlocked cells.
The select pattern is 1 row at a time.

Thanks for your reply Dave

I have your suggestion in place - unfortunately I created the spreadsheet to look like multiple forms - 4 across and 30 down and would like to tab down first then go to the next column of forms etc. It's been suggested to me that it's best to create the spreadsheet then pull a form and I will redo this sheet when finished to learn how. In the meantime my spreadsheet is so close to finished that I'll finish this way first. Just thought there might be a way but it doesn't look like it would be an easy thing.
