Question When I insert a worksheet the cell format is accounting

Greetings all, I am hoping someone can help me with this.

I am working with an xlsx file in Excel 2010 and every time I right click and Insert Worksheet the cell format is set to Accounting by default. How can I fix it so when I insert a new worksheet the cell format is General by default?

    Thanks in advance!

If new workbooks do not have the Accounting format as the default then you might have a new sheet template that does. Check if your Excel start folder has a Sheet.xltx file. If Yes...Excel uses the worksheet in that file as the template for adding sheets. Changing the default format for the sheet in that template will impact all future new sheets that you create.

    Does that help?

This one particular file that I am working in is the only one where this formatting issue happens. Every other excel file has the general cell format as the default.

OK...Check if somebody has changed the default number format in the Normal Style
    • Home.Cell_Styles...Right-Click on Normal...Select: Modify
...What's the number style? Accounting, maybe?

Ron - Yes, the number style is accounting and I want that removed. Every time I create a new worksheet it says "Accounting" in the number section of the ribbon

In the cells section of the ribbon there is just Insert, Delete, and Format. Where can I find the Cell Styles function?

    • Home.Cell_Styles...Right-Click on Normal...Select: Modify
Click the Format button...Change the default number format.

    Does that help?

In the styles section there is just the conditional formatting button, format as a table button, and a bunch of "20% Accent" buttons. The usual style sections with Good/Bad/Neutral, Data and Model, Titles and Headings, etc is not available. As such, there is no "Normal" for me to select. I have attached a picture of my ribbon.

I see the problem...Excel's ribbon automatically adjusts to take "best" advantage of the available real estate. On mine, the Cell Styles are collapsed. On yours, they're expanded

    • Click: the "More" button in the Cell Styles section...the entire window will expand.
then you can right-click on Normal.

That's just the thing, even when I hit "more" it is just all the same format and none of the usual formats are in there. Whoever created this file initially really screwed it up.
