Excel Multiple Search Criteria and Display results

    Vehicle Spec Search 1a.xls
    Hi,
Please excuse my lack of understanding but after spending a couple of hours looking at similar questions I am still struggling with a workable solution...

I have attached an example workbook to try and make explaining this as easy as possible; what I would like to do is enter search terms in cells A3,B3 & C3 and have only the matching results displayed in the table below.
If possible I would like to include "like" results also, so for example if I searched for "For" results for Ford would be displayed.

I would really appreciate a helping hand with this one!

Re: Excel Multiple Search Criteria and Display results

Hi globaltelemetrics and welcome to the forum,

I think the first sheet was making more sense than the new one. With the second I am not even sure where the results would have to go.
Now, if you do want to consider the first sheet you can use this array formula:

    ***Enter with Ctrl+Shift+Enter key combination

In A7 and drag formula to the right

    =INDEX(Data!A$2:A$19,MATCH($A3&$B3&$C3,Data!$A$2:$A$19&Data!$B$2:$B$19,Data!$C$2:$C$19))

You can use advanced data filter to achieve this. See the attached sheet. Hope this helps.

    Vehicle Spec Search 1b.xls

    Hi sktneer,
    Many thanks for your response.
I reverted back to the original worksheet and added the formula (attached with extra data); I have a few issues to address..

On occasions there will be multiple results to be displayed (the formula will only return one result)

I need the search to work on strings so if I entered "A3" in the Model field the entry "A3 sport" would be displayed as well as "A3"

If I only enter "audi" into the make field and leave Model & Year fields empty I would like all "Audi" records to be displayed

    Hope that makes sense.

Re: Excel Multiple Search Criteria and Display results

    Hi Popipipo,

I found your solution fitted my requirements also - thank you for your genius.

However, in expanding/modifying it for my needs I am at a loss to see how to have data past row 11 get included into the search (and I think searches could only be done in the first 3 or 4 columns before I managed to stop it working altogether).

Just to let you know what I am adapting it for - it is simply an 'any column' search directory for me to find business contacts (incidentally, in the Name column I added a .jpg of their business cards to save having to re-type lots of their detail into other columns - like phone numbers and e-mail addresses).

Since starting this message I have since caused it to stop searching. I tried to attach my modified version for you to see what I have done wrong but, remarkably it is 2.43mB in size (even with the .jpgs deleted) - why I don't know as I only have 8 rows of data - so, this forum would not allow me to upload it as being too big. So, I have taken a screen shot too at least let you see some of what I have been doing.

It stopped searching about the time when I was trying to move the SUBTOTAL COUNT formula into the same cell as the reset button... maybe related but I'm not sure.

Using Alt+F11 got me into the VBA side of things where I was intending to try to follow your code and change what I needed to change myself (hopefully self-learning something along the way)... what they say about a little bit of knowledge (being dangerous) is true... they could add 'and no knowledge is deadly'...

Once you have stopped laughing at my ineptitude (or is that tearing your hair out in fraustration) any help would be appreciated.

    Regards,
    Cupsay.

@ Cupsay...Unfortunately your post does not comply with Rule 2 of our Forum RULES. Do not post a question in the thread of another member -- start your own thread.

Re: Excel Multiple Search Criteria and Display results

    Thanks FDibbins,

I've refreshed myself on this forums rules.

I think I might have misinterpreted rule 2 as my post, to my mind, appeared not to have gone outside of the original question by gobaltelemetrics... it merely sought clarification of where in the VBA I could get Popipipo's (helpful) .xls solving the problem to increase its search range (you'll see this asked for in my second sentence).

Nevertheless, taking the point in your last sentence, I'll post it as a new thread (I'll try to link it, as the rules require, back to this thread).

    Regards,
    Cupsay.

I am writing the new thread now but can't see how to link it to this thread... do I just copy the URL and paste it in my question?
