How to work out a percentage from a range of percentages?

Basically I have a few different work units and for each I have a percentage complete. I want to work out the percentage of the whole project that is complete. For examples sakes lets say the percentages are in column A so A1:A5 and they are a mixture of different percentages eg. A1: 24%, A2: 45%, A3: 67%, A4: 75%, A5: 42%. Could someone tell me how I would do this?

I would say it is just the average. For example, if a project has two tasks that are both 50% complete, then the project is 50%. If one task is completed, but the other has not started, that would also be 50%.

I would say, however, that the percentages are not appropriate to gauge the project's completion percentage. You should use the (Number of man-days of completed work)/(Number of man-days of total work). Use man-hours, or man-months to fit your needs.

    Welcome to the Forum!

It depends. If each work unit is the same amount of work, then you can simply use AVERAGE to average all the percentages. However, if the work units are not the same amount of work, you have to multiply each percentage times the amount of work then divide the result by the total amount of work. I would probably use SUMPRODUCT in this formula.

This is simple but impossible to give you a formula without seeing your file. Can you attach it?

    To post a file:
    1. Under the text box where you type your reply click the Go Advanced button.
    2. In the next screen look above the reply box and click the "paper clip" icon. You will get a pop-up screen.
    3. In the pop-up, click Add then Select to select a file from your local drive
    4. Click the Upload button to upload the file
    5. Click Done to attach it.

It will be displayed as an attachment underneath your post text. Alternatively as the last step you can click the Insert Inline button and a hyperlink to the file will be inserted directly into your post text in the spot where your cursor is set at the moment you click the button.
