    IS this Excel

Using this new estimating program at work and many of assemblies rely on these "qty calculation" fields. What language is in the qty. calculation fields? Is it Excel? If so what is the best resource so I can learn some this....when to use brackets, when to use some parentheses, what commas mean. I beleive they are "if then" statements. Some of this is familiar from school. My job depends on it...lol. Thanks a lot.

    Re: IS this Excel

Hard to say. Some of the formulas look similar to Excel but without actually seeing spreadsheets, there is no definitive way of knowing. The form you are showing is not an Excel spreadsheet.

BTW: Posting something on a Saturday night and expecting a response within an hour and half is not realistic. Our forum guidelines suggest a minimum of 24 hours before bumping a thread. This is a worldwide forum of volunteers who log in and review threads at their own convenience. Additionally, pictures are hard to analyze. Actual spreadsheets are better.

Sorry guys I just saw all ** the views...my bad.The support people who work for the company are saying "it's just excel" but slightly advanced. Are the (,[ and other symbols they use part ** the mainstream excel formulas. I know the basic excel formulas and this does not look the same. THanks

Edit: Well maybe it is Excel. I just came across this.

    Re: IS this Excel

And would you say the pic in my first post and the "formulas" in the qty. calculation fields is conditional formatting? They are basically "if than, if not than or if less than...etc. etc." statements. ThAnks

    Re: IS this Excel

no definately no, there also are functions that don't exist natively in excel even if it was they would be custom ones
    eg autocutson()

I'm confused. So your saying its not conditional formatting. Can you explain a little more if you don't mind. Thanks,

    Re: IS this Excel

i cant ,it just states a formula which i have no idea what its for. there is no = sign in front of it which probably means its just text to show what formula is being used,
you can use most formulas in conditional formatting that give true/false answers
=and(a1=4,b1=4) would give true if both =4
but if you used them as a regular worksheet formula you'd probably want some result other than just true/false
=if(and(a1=4,b1=4),"they are both 4","no they are not both 4")

Thanks JB, I appreciate it. There really is no workbook, just the pic I posted which is the electrical estimating program I am using. You must type these "formulas" into the qty. calculation field to get the end result which is certain material.

    Re: IS this Excel

there are loads of electrical estimating program out there some you can import from excel and export to excel but there doesn't seem to be any obligation to have excel on your machine to use them

Looks like the way Access databases do their formulas with a similar syntax to Excel but using the field names for each database filed in square brackets

You are right I am not using excel but the company keeps saying the formulas are Excel or "like" Excel. They also mention SQL but I think that's programming
