    Drop Down List

Hi, I have created and used drop down lists but I want to do something more with a drop down list.
Basically when I drop down my list and choose a selection I want to put a corresponding value into a different cell.

ie. My list could be as follows on sheet 2 (leters in column A, numbers in column B)
The letters A through D are named for my drop down list
    A 1
    B 2
    C 3
    D 4

On sheet one I create my drop down list with the A through D list.
Now when I choose say 'A' from the drop down I would like the number 1 to go into a different cell, or B would get the number 2 and so on.

Can anyone tell me how to do this in excel?

    Thanks

    Re: Drop Down List

Take a look at the attached workbook. Either a VLOOKUP or INDEX/MATCH should solve this easily. Cell A1 on Sheet2 contains the dropdown, and B1 on Sheet2 returns the corresponding numerical value, based on the lookup table in Sheet3.

    Hope this helps!

    Re: Drop Down List

If I can, I'll make an enhancement to the previous answer. If you need to add to the list A, B, C, D, etc, it's better to set up a dynamic Named Range (check it with CTRL +F3) that extends automatically as you add on E, F, G, etc.

That does it, I used the INDEX/MATCH and it works great.

    Thanks for your quick response.

Glen, thanks for the reply, and yes I will be adding to the list occasionally.
