Understanding the mechanics of different Excel functions

Hi,

I'm wondering what the actual mechanics are for the COUPPCD and COUPNCD Excel functions are - as in the behind the scenes calculations both of these functions execute before arriving at a solution? As I'm looking to use a modified version of both COUPPD ad COUPNCD functions for some calculations and so I'd like to understand how these functions behave so I know how to alter them for my own use.

Also is there a database or online link that explains the mechanics of these (and other) Excel functions that someone could please provide me with?

Returns the next coupon date after the settlement date using the specified or default day counting basis =COUPNCD(settlement,maturity,frequency,[basis])


Returns the previous coupon date before the settlement date using the specified or default day counting basis =COUPPCD(settlement,maturity,frequency,[basis])

Thanks jayajaya_4 I understand all of that. As my original post asks, what are the actual mechanics of how this works? I'm thinking the function would work backwards from the maturity date at the rate of coupon payment frequency and return the previous payment date as the closest date before the settlement date. Would that be correct? If not where have I gone wrong?
Where can I find a source of explanations like this on how all Excel functions actually work and not just what inputs go in or the meaning of the output I get (but rather the process Excel goes through to execute each function)?

That doesn't tell you the mechanics of how they work, excel is closed source so you can't see the algorithms used

I only recently got around to looking at the link posted and you're right it doesn't.

To give an example of what I'm looking to do, the COUPPCD and COUNPCD functions are restricted to frequency of coupons of annual/semi-annual/quarterly. I'm looking to use the same functions but for any frequency of coupons - literally any frequency as small as daily up to multiple years at a time. ANy idea how I can tweak or re-write these functions to cater for a much broader range of coupon frequencies?
