Suggestions for recording information about items in a museum

I live in a retirement village in the country. In the village is a home/homestead built in the mid 1800s which is now a museum. It is full of the furniture and accoutrements of that day.
We want to keep a record of every thing and was told "Excel" would be an ideal format to achieve this.
Is there any one out there who can advise us if this is correct. arram

Re: Am I in the right forum

Hi and welcome to the forum.

You're probably in the right sub forum but the choice of title leaves a lot to be desired. Please read our rules, they are straightforward enough. I'll edit the title for you on this occasion but please note when you next post a new thread.

The essence of what you're wanting to do can be achieved with any database system of which there are many. However reading between the lines I'm guessing you want something simple and straightforward and which doesn't cost anything, other than the time to create and maintain an Excel workbook. So in short, yes Excel is a perfectly adequate tool for this sort of task.

If you want more specific advice and help with suggestions then you need to tell us a bit nore. e.g. what types of information are you wanting to record, when you have recorded it what do you then want to do with it? Print it, email it, extract certain data for it, summarise it, total it...but I guess you get the idea if the things we want to know.
