    Coant Work Out A Lookup

    Hi,

In a nutshell, I have a 3-column worksheet where I'm struggling with how to perform the correct vlookup.

Column A contains all sites sold over the last 5 years, column b contains the dates those sites were sold, and column c contains a list of sites where a complaint has been received. Columns A & C are in the same format in terms of layout etc.

I need to find out which sites sold in the last 5 years have had a caomplaint raised - how do I do this?

    Thanks,

Will you please attach a SMALL sample Excel workbook (10-20 rows of data is usually enough)? Please don't attach a picture of one (no-one will want to re-type all your stuff before starting).

    1. Make sure that your sample data are truly REPRESENTATIVE of your real data. The use of unrepresentative data is very frustrating and can lead to long delays in reaching a solution.

    2. Make sure that your desired solution is also shown (mock up the results manually).

    3. Make sure that all confidential information is removed first!!

    4. Try to avoid using merged cells. They cause lots of problems!

Unfortunately the attachment icon doesn't work at the moment. So, to attach an Excel file you have to do the following: Just before posting, scroll down to Go Advanced and then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.

Grrr. This is the array formula needed:

    =IFERROR(INDEX(A:A,SMALL(IF(ISNUMBER(MATCH($A$2:$A$11,$C$2:$C$11,0)),ROW($A$2:$A$11)),ROWS($1:1))),"")

Array Formulae are a little different from ordinary formulae in that they MUST be confirmed in the FIRST CELL ONLY by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER to activate the array, not just ENTER. After that, the array can be dragged down as normal, to cover the desired range.

You will know the array is active when you see curly brackets { } - or "curly braces" for those of you in the USA, or "flower brackets" for those of you in India - appear around the outside of your formula. If you do not use CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER you will (almost always) get an error message or an incorrect answer. Press F2 on that cell and try again.

Don't type the curly brackets yourself - it won't work...

However. Grrr. H0252- Plot 1 (column A) is not the same as H0252 - Plot 1 (column C). I added the extra space manually. It took me ages to spot the missing space...

Re: Coant Work Out A Lookup

    Hi,

    Thanks for replying again.

I tried inserting the formula as instructed but I'm unable to drag the formula down to cover multiple rows.

Basiccally columns 1 and 2 contain around 25000 rows of data, and column 3 has a couple of thousand rows. I'd like to drag the formula down so column d returns around 2000 rows, with the dates from column c included. I hope this makes sense?

    No, not much sense, TbH....

Q1. Does the sheet attached at Post 4 do as you expected. yes or no? If no... please attach a sheet showing what you DO expect it to do.

Q2. What is the EXACT formula that you have used in your real sheet?

Q3. What exactly do you mean by "I'm unable to drag the formula down to cover multiple rows."?? What happens when you (try to) drag the formula?
