the link you have provided led me to clip it is about vertical cells but in my case i have merge two cell horizontally .
merged cells should be avoided at all costs - they cause endless problems with formulas - as you are discovering.
Doesnt matter if they are merged horizontal, vertical or both, in a merged cell, only the top left most cell contains anything, ALL other cells in the merged range are considered empty/blank

Did you miss the first paragraph in the link that said you should avoid merged cells.
Instead of merging the cells, what is your end goal?
What are you trying to do and maybe there is a different solution.
What is the purpose of merging cells if "A1" if "A2" is blank?
