Question RAG Conditional formatting against a target grade

    Hi All,
New to this forum and was looking for some guidance please with conditional formatting in excel.

Im a beginner with excel and have managed to put together the attached spreadsheet to collect student test data.

I've managed to do the lookups to find a grade for each test result but what I'm struggling with is how to colour the test grade either RED (if it is below target), AMBER (if it is on target) or GREEN (if it is above target) according to how it compares to their TARGET grade (column I) on the combined worksheet.

I have tried may variations by watching YouTube videos but I haven't managed to get it to work yet. Is there anyone who could guide me please.

Your help would be very much appreciated

    Sarb

Re: RAG Conditional formatting against a target grade

    Welcome to the forum.

I have set up a lookup list on your Boundaries tab to convert grades to points, then set up these rules for red, amber and green:

    =VLOOKUP(L3,Boundaries!$AA$2:$AB$29,2,0)-IFNA(VLOOKUP($I3,Boundaries!$AA$2:$AB$29,2,0),VLOOKUP(--$I3,Boundaries!$AA$2:$AB$29,2,0))<0

    =VLOOKUP(L3,Boundaries!$AA$2:$AB$29,2,0)-IFNA(VLOOKUP($I3,Boundaries!$AA$2:$AB$29,2,0),VLOOKUP(--$I3,Boundaries!$AA$2:$AB$29,2,0))=0

    =VLOOKUP(L3,Boundaries!$AA$2:$AB$29,2,0)-IFNA(VLOOKUP($I3,Boundaries!$AA$2:$AB$29,2,0),VLOOKUP(--$I3,Boundaries!$AA$2:$AB$29,2,0))>0

I've applied these only to your first assessment - let me know if that's what you are looking for. If so, the rule can be applied to all ranges required.

    I am a retired HoD.

AliGW, that's amazing and exactly what I needed, thank you so so much for your help.

Just one final question please if I may. Is it now just a case of applying the VLOOKUP rules you've created to every other column

Again, thank you so much for your help with this...saved me loosing the will to live

No, it’s just a case of adding the ranges to the Applies to box. I have a copy of the workbook t with this implemented, but have logged off for the evening. I can share it with you tomorrow morning.

Will do. I’m a lark, so it’ll be done early. I taught languages.
