    Adding Time together

I have a load of times imported from a text file into Excel.

They are an amount of time rather than a time of day and I want to add all the time together so I end up with a total amount of hours.

Sometimes the time is represented as 00:33 (0 minutes, 33 seconds).
Sometimes the time is represented as 5:33 (5 minutes, 33 seconds).
Sometimes the time is represented as 104:00:00 (104 minutes, 0 seconds, 0 something!)

I cannot figure out which format to use for the cells. When I change to particular formats the 104:00:00 changes to 8:00 which will give me a wrong result.

I also am unsure about creating the formula to add them up. Do I use SUM or TIME?

    Any help gratefully received!

You can SUM times just like other numbers, using SUM function, but format all cells as [h]:mm to show elapsed hours over 24.

If you have 00:33 for 33 seconds better check that the cell is formatted in this case to mm:ss. If it's formatted to hh:mm (which is the default) then you've actually got 33 minutes as the value, and you can't change that with formatting alone

    Thanks for the info.

Before I read your reply the problem was doing my head in so I did it a billy bodge way.

I changed the text file I was importing the times from to just be times with a colon between the times and used the colon as a delimiter. Then I had minutes and second in two columns in Excel so added them up and divided by 60 until I had hours & minutes.

Have been trying for several hours on and off. Would have been quicker with a calculator!
