Stop cursor selecting four horizontal cells at a time

Sorry this is a really silly little thing, but I cannot for the life of me get my cursor to select less than fopur horizontal cells at a time. I've obviously hit an errant key combination at the moment, but cannot find the fix.

try holding down both shift keys at the same time
    failing that try f8
    to toggle EXT mode on/off
look at botttom tool bar it should say NUM not EXT and NUM
