Extracting data from a long list

I have a list of 8000 names and need to extract 500 of them without going through them line by line - whats the best thing to do?

Hi and welcome to the board
On what criteria should the names be extracted?

Tell us how/why you determine the 500 ?
If it's because they're unique names in the list then have a look at Advanced Filter http://www.contextures.com/xladvfilter01.html (filter unique records)

Wow - what a quick response (thank you).
The large list has names displayed as 'Mary Smith' in one column. The 500 are displayed as Column 1 'Mary' and Column 2 'Smith'. Hope this is clear

If you want to extract the full name in column 3 where there is a string in col 2 try =if(b2="","",a2&" "&b2)

Looks promising - I am a new user so forgive the silly questions ...

I now have two lists with the same name - when I copy the new list of names to a new cell the reference is lost - how do I lock in the new list?
