On what criteria should the names be extracted?
Tell us how/why you determine the 500 ?
If it's because they're unique names in the list then have a look at Advanced Filter http://www.contextures.com/xladvfilter01.html (filter unique records)

The large list has names displayed as 'Mary Smith' in one column. The 500 are displayed as Column 1 'Mary' and Column 2 'Smith'. Hope this is clear
If you want to extract the full name in column 3 where there is a string in col 2 try =if(b2="","",a2&" "&b2)
Looks promising - I am a new user so forgive the silly questions ...
I now have two lists with the same name - when I copy the new list of names to a new cell the reference is lost - how do I lock in the new list?
You can Copy - Paste Special - Values to other cells
excel has me confused before, i think it's a challenge to be able to know every feature and formula. but in the end, it's worth it!
