Can anything else be put in the cell? If yes, how do you need to handle?
If no:
Format|Conditional Formatting >> Cell Value Is >> Is Greater Than >> =0
If yes (and you only want dates coloured):
Format|Conditional Formatting >> Formula Is >> =Isnumber($A$1)
where A1 is the cell you are on and want to colour.
After you choose from options above, click Format to continue to choose the colour.
Where there is a will there are many ways.

TIA - Thanks in Advance.
Thanks for that now can I take it one step further. Nothing in the cell so its white. When I put a date in the cell I want it to turn green or red depending whether the date is higher or lower than a cell I want to reference it to.
=And(Isnumber($A$1),$A$1<=$B$1) for Green
=And(Isnumber($A$1),$A$1<$B$1) for Red
You may need to alter for your exact requirements..
where B1 contains date to check against.
Sorry I am a novice at this. Where do I put these formulas. I have put them in the conditioning format as condition 2 and condition 3, condition 1 as your first reply. I have put the condition to be white,green and red respectively for conditions1,2 and 3, but the colour of the cell stays white no matter what I type in the cell
You replace Condition 1 with one of the new formulas... then after you selected the format for that condition, click Add, select Formula Is and paste the other formula in the 2nd condition.. then click format to get the new colour scheme.
Thanks again ,sorted. Needed to put right cell value for A1 as well as B1
