Question Worksheet Filtering - How to see # of occurrences rather than Filter Mode?

Hi - In various worksheets with filtering set on columns, I sometimes see a count of the # of occurrences in one of my spreadsheets, as I filter on a specific column. For example, if column "A" is Months and I select JAN, I might see 15 occurrences.

Yet in other spreadsheets I create, I'll filter on column "A" for the the month and only see "Filter Mode" rather than an actual count.

Do I have to format the cells in a certain manner to see this or set an option on for the worksheet? It's beneficial to see occurrence counts rather than the "Filter Mode" message.

I'm using Office 2003 ... Thanks for any tips on this

    Hi Harry,

If you right click in the bottom bar (where "Filter Mode" is displayed) you should get several options that you can select, including count, average, sum, etc...They will only count (or average or sum) the cells you have highlighted, and this works whether you are in filter mode or not (but in filter mode it only counts visible cells, unlike most formulas that will count both visible and hidden cells)

I hope this is what you were looking for.

Debra Dalgleish addresses your issue at her website:

    Does that link help?

^ Thanks for both of your informative posts, as I never realized "why" this was happening .... Yes, I'm using tons of formulas there and filtering works best on real values

    This also helped ...
