Combine cells for user input/print friendly output

Go easy on me, I'm new here and I'm not really sure how to ask this so it's clear...

I need to have cells that are varying width that won't effect the width of the cells in the row below them, so: A1 may be 20 pixels wide, B1 may be 40px wide, C1 - 30px wide. THEN A2 - 40px, B2 - 30px, C2 - 20px.

Yes, I'm trying to create something that would be better suited for a design package, but I need the data functionality of Excel, then be able to print a nice looking result.

Is this possible?

Not in Excel. Columns are the same width throughout the column, rows are the same height throughout the row.

Someone will suggest creating narrow columns and merging cells to achieve the appearance. Don't do it if there are any downstream dependencies on the contents. There are hundred of threads in the forum from people trying to solve problems caused by merged cells, and the answer is universal: don't.
