    Advanced Search

I would not go as far as to say I am new to Excel but I am fairly new to the more advanced features of it.

I have 2,500 rows that I need to sort into some logical order. Straight Alphabetical will not do.

Column A contains information such as the following

    dem1_01_hid_01
    dem1_01_hid_02
    dem1_01_sab_01
    dem1_01_sab_02
    dem1_02_hid_01
    dem1_02_m04_01
    dem1_02_m05_01
    dem1_02_m06_01
    dem1_03_hid_01
    dem1_03_m04_01
    dem1_03_m05_01
    dem1_03_m06_01
    dem1_03_sab_01
    dem1_04_hid_01
    dem1_04_m04_01
    dem1_04_m05_01
    dem1_04_m06_01
    dem1_04_sab_01

I would like to be able to sort on the 9th, 10th & 11th chars from the left e.g. row one would be 'hid' and then all the 'hid's after that and so on. The secondary sort can then be on the 1st - 4th chars from the left.

Anybody able to assist me with this?

To get an output like this

    dem1_01_hid_01 hid dem1
    dem1_01_hid_02 hid dem1
    dem1_02_hid_01 hid dem1
    dem1_03_hid_01 hid dem1
    dem1_04_hid_01 hid dem1
    dem1_02_m04_01 m04 dem1
    dem1_03_m04_01 m04 dem1
    dem1_04_m04_01 m04 dem1
    dem1_02_m05_01 m05 dem1
    dem1_03_m05_01 m05 dem1
    dem1_04_m05_01 m05 dem1
    dem1_02_m06_01 m06 dem1
    dem1_03_m06_01 m06 dem1
    dem1_04_m06_01 m06 dem1
    dem1_01_sab_01 sab dem1
    dem1_01_sab_02 sab dem1
    dem1_03_sab_01 sab dem1
    dem1_04_sab_01 sab dem1

Assuming the data is at the top of column A, type

With these two helper columns you can then do your sort.
