Show how many days holiday

Hello

I am trying to find a formula to make excel show how many days holiday have been taken

The spreadsheet shows three months on one row, It uses L for full days off, and H for half days off. I want excel to add these up in a cell,

i tried =SUMIF(E4:CQ4,L,+1)(E4:CQ4,H,+0.5)

this doesn't seem to work,

could anyone help?

Thanks, i tried that one,

It still shows a value of 0, even though i've got the letter L in all teh relevant cells,

do i need another cell with an initial sum in it?

Do the cells with "L" (or "H") contain anything else?

No they don't, literally just the letters L and H

=(COUNTIF(E4:CQ4,"h")*0.5)+(COUNTIF(E4:CQ4,"l")*1)
