Re: Dropdown List, Dependent on Previous Column's Text

    nickls,
I have been trying to learn the same thing working throught the examples on the website also. http://www.contextures.com/xlDataVal02.html
I was able to get the 2nd column as described in the 'produce' exercise (2 column exercise with the sencond column allowable selection to be dependant on the 1st columns' selection.
However I was unable to get the formula as shown in the 'countries' example. (3 column exercise with the sencond and third column allowable selection to be dependant on the 1st and ssecond columns' selection).
However, the formula given in the next excerise 'Using Two-Word Items' worked (using the columns you mentioned.
    =INDIRECT(A2) - Entered into your B2 cell.
    =INDIRECT(SUBSTITUTE(B2," ","")) -Entered into your C2 cell.
I'm not sure if the formula as shown in the excercise should be working or if it is a typo (just since we're both having problems with it). Maybe someone can verify if the forula given in the countries example (on the link abve) to see if it works. It is shown in the excercise as =INDIRECT(SUBSTITUTE(B2&C2," ",""))
Is there an advantage to referencing the 2 cells (if you can get it to work).
Thank you very much for the link Paul! While I'm sure to hit some hurdles it seems to have great information.

Thank you very much Martin. I see that does work. I think where I was going wrong, was, I wasn't putting the names together for the headings. e.g. rather than 'canadaontario' I just had 'Ontario'.
Thank you very much your verifying and providing the exercise file.

    Hi Cidona,

In the future, please don't post in someone else's thread, per the forum rules. Start a new thread, and provide a link to the relevant thread you want to cite.

Also, if you're issue is resolved, please mark this thread as solved by going to the original post in the thread and click Edit -> Go Advanced -> change the 'Prefix' drop-down to 'Solved' -> click Save Changes.

    Thanks!

Re: Dropdown List, Dependent on Previous Column's Text

Paul, apoligies for any procedures I didn't follow. I was aware of the forum's rules in regrds to posting on someone else's thread, but my intial post on this thread was directly related to nickls's situation (that he may have been held up in the same regards I was) and that my mentioning the part of single cell reference may have helped him out.
As far as marking as solved, I felt since nickls was the oringal poster, that the solved mark should made by nickls, if he has found the replies to solve his post. If you still feel I should mark it as solved (rather than nickls), please advise and I will do so.
When I went to the forum to try and get help with my problem, nickls's thread was top of the list and was the exact same issue I was having, therefore didn' want people's energy to be spread over two 'current' thread's dealing with the exact same problem.
Again apoligies. In future I will start a new thread.
(Edit), just realised that nickls's thread and mine have been separated. I have marked this portion as solved.
Again thank you very much for your solution and keeping me on the straight and narrow
