    Summing Formulas Questions

    I have a column of names and next to that I have a column of numbers (currency). I would like to know if there is a way of adding up all the currency assosiated with the names. Example: cell A3 contains $200 cell B3 contains Jim cell A4 contains $100 cell B4 contains bill cell A5 contains $200 cell B5 contains jim cell A6 contains $100 cell B6 contians bill. This continues for 20 rows randomly placing names down the column. I want to figure out how much bill has paid at the end of the year by adding up all the cells next to his name. I have no way of telling how many times his name will be entered or in what order it will be entered. Is there a way to do this?

    Next question. How do you sum an entire column? I do not want to create a cell that does a sum from A2 to A10 because I may go much farther than this. Can this be done or do I have to just do a sum from A2 to A100000 or somthing rediculouse like that? Thanks for any help.

    Re: Formula Questions

    1) Sum an entire column:

    =SUM(A:A)

    2) Sum one range of numbers if the adjacent cells match a particular string:

    =SUMIF(A:A, "Jim", B:B)

    NOTE:

    I think your thread title is accurate, but the mods here are much more stringent. You might want to EDIT that original post and GO ADVANCED to change the title to something more exact, like "Summing ranges"

    Re: Summing Formulas Questions

    Glad to help. If you haven't read them yet, use the Forum Rules link in the menu bar above to read them over. The mods enforce them and they are, pretty much, of good benefit to all.

    I try not to use the QUOTE button, it just duplicates the previous post for no reason. The Quick Reply button button to the right is just as good.

    Welcome to the forum, hope you enjoy all there is to find here.
    ========

    If that takes care of your need, please click EDIT in your original post, click GO ADVANCED and set the PREFIX box to SOLVED.
