    Workbook/Cell security & permissions

    Hi all,

I have a workbook that 5+ employees collaborate on and make alterations too. The workbook contains 2+ spreadsheets where cells are linked to autopopulate based on an entry from the linked cells.

    The question:
How do I limit what user can edit their portion of the workbook? ie, Joe can only edit columns A & B of workbook 1, and Susan only columns B & C?

    Ideas?

    Thanks

Have a look at the Allow Users to Edit Ranges option under Tools...Protection.

    Re: Workbook/Cell security & permissions

    Hi Dom,

Thanks for the help. I followed the article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/289270 to do that.

I've given certain cell ranges permission to 1 person via the permissions button and using their Active Directory account. I then protected the workbook, and saved it.

But, I was able to open and edit the document & fields under a different persons computer/login. Therefore, it didnt work.

    Ideas?

Did you protect the sheet, or workbook?

    I protected the workbook.

Also, when I attempt to edit an empty cell I do get the denied error that the cell is protected and read only. But, I can still edit the cells/content that I've assigned permission to via Active Directory IDs.

Sorry, the sheet and workbook were both protected.

I'd have to guess the permissions were assigned incorrectly then

    Re: Workbook/Cell security & permissions

I may have figured it out.

The permissions were set to the Active Directory users, but I did not enter a password.

So, if a user attempts to edit the data and is not part of that "allow edit without password" via permission, he/she could edit it.

Meaning, I would have to assign a password, then via permissiosn add the users LDAP so they would not be prompted to enter that password. Right?

    Re: Workbook/Cell security & permissions

Thanks guys. I've figured it out with your help. Now, I have a similar problem.

I am able to give permission-those without permission cannot edit the range defined. But, they need to be able to add new rows/columns. But, I've granted this in the protect sheet box.

    Here's what I mean:
