need drop down list to select certain rows

OK, I have seen this in use at a workplace but couldn't analyze it to see how it was done. Basically, they had the top row of the columns as the heading. But it could turn into a drop down list and you could select unique values in the list which were present in that column, thus, hiding all the other rows which did not have that value in that column. You could then select another one as you pleased.
This was like a permanent filter, and in you could select for instance in my spreadsheet, on the heading cell - "BRANCH" there would be options All, 100, 200, 300... Same with the delivery date columns, would have all unique values like 23/9/12, 24/9/12,etc. Don't need a filter for the names, since they are all different. None of this data is sensitive, just fake data created for testing, its basically customer names, there prescription entry date, date of dispatch and date it is delivered on.#

I've tried going on "Data", and selecting "Filter", but that isn't the same. This one I need was permanent, and it was just like a normal drop down list that was always there.
Appreciate any help.

Hi Bro
Not expert in excel byut looking at your sheet, I believe that this will help you by creating the drop-down list. however you need to do is the list all the common dates (which comes again and again) on he xtreme right side of sheet. slet the area where you need dropdown list and from Ribbon-> DATA->Select data validation->under this form Select List on drop down, assign data (list of dates) and click OK

Hope this will meet your need

Its not a drop-down list, its a filter. on the home ribbon, go to sort and filter, select filter. you will then have what looks like a drop-down list, but is actually a filter that will hide all rows that do not contain what you select
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)

Actually I tried that, but it isn't giving me what I was expecting. It gave me this:

Which is a Filter, but the one I saw being used at this place was much better. Just had a normal drop down with options All, 100,200,etc.

sorry, i cant open .png files, maybe upload a sample of your workbook? from the sounds of it tho, what you saw was a filter. it looks like a drop-down, but all a drop-down does, is select a particular value, while a filter hides all rows that do NOT contain your selection.

see the attached example. if you click on the "drop-down" arrow (its actually the filter selection arrow), you will see that i have ONLY selected 30%, and all other rows are now hidden. if you select the "all" selection, it will make all of the rows visible.

try this and let me know if this is what you want?

Yeah this is the kind of filter which I can make, but what I saw was definitely different from that. It was like a true drop down. It would have all values which are present in the column, just click the arrow, select the value and then it hides all other rows. Whereas this filter one has all the sort smallest to largest, sort by color, etc on it.
Perhaps I am barking completely up the wrong tree and it was some type of macro? Hopefully you understand what it was that I saw.

yes it may have been a macro, or maybe it is a new function in 2010 (im running 2007). the nice thing about using filters (as per my example), is that you can apply more than 1 filter, eg filter on male/female, then filter on hair color, then filter on shoe size, then filter on height etc etc

I am sure what you are seeing is a filter, or a dropdown (DATA Validation). Forget if I am wrong...Good luck
