Can I automate the populating values in two variables?

    Hi Excel Forum,

The attached table mimics the massive table that I am working with.

I wanted to populate values of two variables.

For e.g., I wanted to populate the yellow portion of the table with the value “A”; blue portion with the value “B”; Green portion with the value “3/1/1993” and so on (different colors were used to aid my question only, there are no such colors in the actual table).

I have about 700 such portions to be fill in.

    My approach:
I just started to copy and paste manually which is tedious.

    Question;
Would there be any automated way to do this?

    Thank you

In cell A2 and copied over to column B and copied down, you could use this simple formula:
Please Login or Register to view this content.
That way the cells will always look at the cells above them and inherit its value. Then you would just enter the values where necessary. So in A2 you would enter "A" and all cells below it become "A". Next in cell A8 you would enter "B" and all cells below that become "B" (and cells above it retain their "A" value). Do the same with the dates in column B.

Beyond that, unless there is a specific algorithm for Excel to follow, its not going to know when you want what village or what date to be put where.
    Hope that helps,

    Hi ~tigeravatar,

Thank you very much for your response.

However, I cannot find the "simple formula" that you have suggested.

There is a "box like" thing at the first few lines (begining) of your reply. I tried to open it, but cannot.

Should I open it to find your formala.

Please let me know. I think correct answer is sunk in your post which I cannot find.

    Thanks

The box like thing only contains this:
    =A1
