If you are starting form a 'real' template (*.xltx, *.xltm) then all changes to a file created with the template will apply only to that file. It's not clear exactly what you mean by saying
I would like to be able to add additional tabs with the original blank template
Is it that you have a template for a worksheet (rather than a workbook), and you want to add another instance of the 'blank' worksheet?
As an example, if you Insert|Sheet you get a new sheet with the standard grid headers, and that's it. I wonder if what you'd like to get is a new sheet with the grid headers (and colors, and fancy fonts, etc) that you have spent so much time creating?
If this is the case, then I think the only thing you can do is to write a macro that will either
(i) Create the new sheet programmatically or
(ii) Go out to the original template and copy in a new instance of your previous work or
(iii) Arguably the easiest) keep a hidden copy of your formatted sheet around, and unhide it briefly, while you copy it within the workbook, then hide it again. (Again, easiest done with a macro)
See the attached workbook for an example of (iii) (Don't let it frustrate you - the formatting is very basic, just to show a point!
The code of the two buttons is replicated here - but you can see it by typing Alt+F11, and looking in Module 1
