Getting information from an Access 97 MDB into Excel 2013

Im trying to pull quite a bit of information from a .MDB database that I believe is in Access 97 format into Excel 2013. I cannot access the information directly with Excel 2013 due to Microsoft no longer supporting the older file structure. Excel 2007 will allow me to access the database and pull the information into Excel. My thought was that I would open an instance of 2007 in the background and use it to pull the information into 2013. I would like the VBA modules to be in the 2013 file because that file will be open on the users machine.
I have no issue opening the instance of 2007 but I cant seem to be able to activate it and control it. It just sits there.

Does anyone know how I could control a previous version of excel with a newer one? Or for that matter an easier way to bring an older .mdb into excel 2013

If you can get the data into XL2007, why not save the file as an .XLSX, then close XL2007 and open the file into XL2013 ?
