Merging Cells with common string Values

Hi.

I am new to excel & I am working on a file which is having records in three columns. The Row items are close to 1000. But I want to format in such a way that the cells are merged for a common string..Just like we do Merge & Center..I want the excel formula to do it..
But I could not find any formula..
I have attached the file with 2 Work sheets " AS IS" & "TO BE"

Thanks in advance for the help

Thanks walruseggman..It has worked but only thing is that..I dont want to merge the cells of column c which have common value to the next row item. My sincere apology, I did not make the question lucid in the first place..The snapshots would make it clear I guess..walruseggman answer.JPGDesired answer.JPG

If you look at the desired answer image..The cell containing value"B" corresponding to John-->Dallas is not merged with the cell containing value "B" corresponding to John-->Texas..
I am not sure this can be done in the slightest of tweaks or the VBA has to be changed altogether.. I'll give a try..Please let me know if you have answer for this..
Thanks again.!!

HB07, a word of caution. Most experienced users try and avoid the use of merged cells if at all possible. They may look nice, but they cause endless problems with formulas
1. Use code tags for VBA.
Your Code
(or use the # button)
2. If your question is resolved, mark it SOLVED using the thread tools

Ford..Yeah I understand that it creates problems..but my worry is that I need to make the excel file in the presentable format so that the reader can get to know easily..Thanks for your generous words..But I have got no other option then to use merged cells..I sincerely acknowledge your advice.

Re: Merging Cells with common string Values

HB07, I'm not sure I have a good way to approach what you're asking. Like FDibbins mentioned, merged cells in VBA are kind of a nightmare, and I'm not really sure how you would keep track of which row numbers to look at in Column B as you worked your way down column C. If there is any way to not use merged cells, that would be great.

Otherwise, maybe the solution is simpler that I'm imagining, and another user can post a solution.
