    Angry Trouble with import wizard

    Hey guys,

So I'm trying to import a bunch of data into a spreadsheet, but the data isnt being imported correctly. Whenever I try to import anything, text import wizard shows a mix of symbols and not the data I need. I've attached a picture of what text wizard is returning.

If you could help me out, it would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Hank

what is the source/file type that you are importing?
Looks like I see .xml in the gibberish.

Your screenshot suggests that you are trying to import a file named "book2.xlsx", which would be a regular Excel file, not a text file. I would suggest opening the file using the regular "File -- Open" command, which should give you regular spreadsheet access to the file's contents.

would it be possible to open multiple documents at once and get them all on one sheet?

    Re: Trouble with import wizard

I'm sure it is possible, and I expect there are many different ways to accomplish this kind of goal.

I tend to use "copy and paste" type operations for this sort of thing. I don't know if it would be helpful, but I see a lot of talk on these kind of forums about using VBA macros to automate this kind of copy and paste type operation.

The other strategy I use is to link the worksheets together using worksheet formulas.

I have seen that there is an "import external data" command that can import data from Excel files, though I have not really used this strategy. I have used this quite frequently with text files, but not with Excel files.

I think that, before we will be able to make a good, specific recommendation, we will probably need a better understanding of what exactly you are trying to do. This should probably include information about what the "source" files look like, what data you want to include in the consolidation, if you do not want to include all of the data, then some indication of how you will decide what to include and what not to include, and something about the desired final format of the consolidated file.

    Re: Trouble with import wizard

The source files I'm trying to import are all just basic excel files with #s. I think they're .xlxs ? I'm just trying to import a folder full of files all with data into one consolidated spreadsheet that I would eventually sort out and move to another file.

    Re: Trouble with import wizard

Is the end goal a usable "database" of information that you will be able to query and summarize and pivot, or is this consolidation headed towards some other goal? Is each file similar to the others, or is each file going to be quite different? What level of automation do you want?

As I indicated, I usually take the least automated most tedious route on these kinds of problems. Even if it is kind of tedious, I can almost always manually copy and paste or cut and paste the information from each file into the destination file faster than I can develop and debug the other approaches. It might be tedious, but it also might be easiest and fastest.

If you need something more automated, this thread from earlier this month may be of interest: http://www.excelforum.com/excel-prog...directory.html
