    Post Sound Matching - Excel

    Dear All,

    Hello and Greetings from Mysuru!

I am a Para-Medical Research student. I am naive of using the excel.

I would like to seek your kind suggestions and gestures regarding making "Automated Phonetic Matching" (Sound alike) list for the brand names of the drugs.

I have a drug brand list of 10,000 in excel 2010. Now, with this I would like to separate sound alike drugs thereby reduce the dispensing errors in our hospital.

After a brief search, I came across Soundex. But I cant put it to further use. So was with Beider-Morse Phonetic Matching.

I request all of you, to help me in this regard.

    Warm regards
    Harsha

    Hello Harsha,

    Welcome to the Forum!

Given the pharmaceutical industry's penchant for unusual brand names and they tend to create their own pronunciations of these names, I am not certain the Soundex algorithm will help you. If you have drugs which not American made then Soundex will most likely fail since it based on American English phonetics.

Are you having problems converting these algorithms into VBA?
    Sincerely,
    Leith Ross

    Dear Ross,

Thank you. I have just uploaded the file. so the second column contains the brand names of the drugs. In this list, I want to separate the sound alike drugs.

Reason: a 45 yr old female was dispensed and administered with an antibiotic called Linezolid (Lincef) instead of vitamin C (Limcee) chews due to their brand names are sound alike.

I don't want this to happen with other patients.

Thanks for your time and efforts.

    Warm Regards,
    Harsha

    Hello Harsha,

I have a couple of questions about how this program should work.

1, Will the staff be typing in the name of the drug based on how it sounds?

    2. Will the drug name be selected from a list?

    Hi Ross,

    Thank you for asking.

1 . No Ross, From the hospital formulary, they will order the drugs. Brands just get added up.

from these brand names (Column B) we want to separate sound alikes into column C.

Further, whenever some one tries to enter a drug brand name into Column B, the algorithm should be able to sort out its sound alikes and update the Column C.

    Is that possible Ross?

    Many Regards,
    Harsha

    Thank you Popipipo,

I am happy that you helped to solve this. However, I am not able to figure this out. When I have the whole drug list, the phonetics codex should be able to highlight the sound alike within the list and highlight them. Eg. If I am about to see a brand "LIMCEE" it should highlight the sound alike like brand name "Lincef".

There by the dispenser of the medicines will be cautious.

    Hope you understand...

    Many Regards
    Harsha

    Re: Sound Matching - Excel

It doesn't work with 'sound a like', it is a filter and only reduce misspellings
