Can you convert excel macros to word macros (for formatting)?

The following macro adds supescript or subscript to the contents of all the cells in the selected range, wherever there's ^ for superscript or _ for subcript. (basically it only changes formatting and removes the helping ^_ signs after that). I would like a similar word macro which does the same in selected text. Obviously some changes have to be made as word has no cells, but I expect not much.
